The New Amsterdam String Band
Exploring Appalachian traditions and their European roots
August 7-9, 2026
Rosette launches its inaugural season with a special weekend exploring the historical journey of music from Baroque Europe to Appalachia through workshops and performances by NYC’s New Amsterdam String Band. This introductory weekend invites new audiences into the world of early music before the series continues with performances devoted to repertoire of the Baroque era.
SPECIAL EVENT:
Learn an Old-Time tune with the New Amsterdam String Band
Bring your fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, or other instrument and learn the Old-Time Appalachian tune “Squirrel Hunters” with the New Amsterdam String Band. The NASB will also perform other traditional tunes and a Baroque dance piece to highlight common features of these two traditions. Presented in partnership with the Asheville Music School.

The New Amsterdam String Band is a dynamic NYC-based ensemble of Juilliard-trained musicians exploring the connections between American fiddle traditions and their European roots. The band has performed with Rhiannon Giddens and Paul Simon and recently recorded music for an upcoming Ken Burns documentary. Their Asheville residency includes a public tune-learning session, a concert of Baroque and traditional American music at St. Giles Chapel, and a performance of Bluegrass and Appalachian tunes with curator commentary at the Asheville Art Museum.

The New Amsterdam String Band performs a one-hour concert tracing connections between Baroque dance music and traditional tunes from Appalachia and beyond.

The New Amsterdam String Band performs a concert of Appalachian and Bluegrass music, with a nod to the European ancestry of these traditions. The event will feature a special curator presentation of three notable artworks from the Asheville Art Museum’s collection that relate to the musical program.
